Things to Do in Corolla
The beach is obviously the main draw when you visit the Outer Banks. When you’re just steps from the sand, enjoying a great beach vacation is so easy. Head out for a morning jog along the sand, dash out for a swim any time of day, and enjoy romantic moonlit strolls in the evenings. You can easily spend the day working on your tan, with a great book in hand, but if you prefer a more active beach experience, Corolla is the perfect place. The Outer Banks are known for being an excellent destination for water sports like wind surfing, stand-up paddling, and kayaking. You can also put your fishing skills to the test, whether from the shore, a fishing pier, or aboard a deep-sea charter. And of course, your kitchen is fully equipped for cooking up your fresh catch in the evening!
When you’re looking for a great day exploring the water, the first place you should turn is North Beach Watersports. Depending on your desired thrill level, you can go parasailing, rent a waverunner and race around with friends, or take the kids on a tubing excursion. You can also pick up kayak and paddleboard rentals here, which are absolutely essential for exploring the nearby Currituck Estuarine Reserve, a nearly 1000-acre reserve which includes a huge variety of habitats like ocean beaches, maritime forests, fresh and saltwater marshes, and tidal flats. You can easily spend a whole day paddling around here!
There are also many land-based activities to enjoy here in Corolla. Take a tour to see the famous wild mustangs which roam the beaches and visit the Corolla Wild Horse Fund Museum and Store to learn more about them (and take home unique souvenirs). You can also arrange a visit to the Wild Horse Rescue Farm and say hello to some of the elderly horses who reside there. Take a walk in the Currituck National Wildlife Refuge and see how many species of migratory birds you can spot; stop off first at the Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education to learn as much as you please about the area’s flora and fauna before you head out hiking.
Next door, you’ll find the Currituck Lighthouse, an incredible spot to get expansive views of not only Corolla town and Currituck Sound, but also the Atlantic Ocean. A view from up here will remind you just how narrow the Outer Banks islands actually are! And you’ll also get a great workout climbing the stairs in this fascinating historic lighthouse. After that, stop by for a tour of Whalehead, an Art Nouveau-style 1920s estate that was built as a hunting lodge by a wealthy couple. Get a glimpse of how the Outer Banks looked back then, in a time before paved roads came here. Tour the beautiful home, fully restored in the 1990s, and decide for yourself if it’s actually haunted. Make sure to leave a bit of time to stroll the beautiful 39 acres of waterfront grounds that make up the rest of the Whalehead Estate.
If you’re looking for an adventure challenge during your stay, make sure to check out Corolla Adventure Park. This giant jungle gym in the sky is made up of 11 obstacle courses and 8 zip lines, so you can challenge your ninja warrior skills in whatever way you please. For those who prefer to keep both feet on the ground, why not try your hand at axe throwing?

While Corolla is a quieter town than some Outer Banks destinations, you’ll still be able to find some great meals here. Since seafood is the local specialty, make sure you stop at Fatcrabs Rib Company & Seafood Shack for a no-frills, down-home seafood experience!
