Perched along the Currituck Sound in Historic Corolla, the sprawling Whalehead Club is a restored mansion surrounded by 39 acres of land. Its yellow exterior and copper roof in a 1920s-era Art Nouveau-style architecture provide a striking setting for hosting special events such as weddings, receptions, rehearsal dinners, family reunions, anniversaries, corporate events, and birthday milestones, among other memorable events. If you’re not planning a special event but are still interested in exploring the beautiful grounds of the Whalehead Club in Historic Corolla, tours are offered on weekdays from 10am-4pm. Originally built as a lavish hunting retreat for Edward Collings Knight Jr. and his wife, Marie Louise, this home has been carefully restored to its original features and décor. The Whalehead in Historic Corolla is a treasured part of the area’s history and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A tour of this exquisite 21,000 square foot mansion will not only provide an intimate glimpse of the era’s former luxuries, but also provide a broader picture of the area’s history, the building’s architecture and construction, the lives of the servants, the Outer Banks maritime heritage, and Outer Banks legends. Inside the home, those with an eye for architecture will delight in details such as the original Steinway piano, Tiffany glass sconces, corduroy walls, and cork flooring.

The Outer Banks has its share of pirate tales, shipwrecks, and lost colonies that weave a storied past rich with mystery. For those who thrill in mysterious tales of the paranormal, the Legends, Lore and Ghost Tour is available on Wednesday evenings during summer months.

Guided tours at Whalehead are $7 for adults and $5 for children ages 6-12. Children 5 and under enter free. Additional specialty tours are available, and prices vary by tour.
