History of the Outer Banks

A trip to the Outer Banks is filled with fun and it’s also a chance to learn more about the history of the Outer Banks. Taking time to look back is an amazing route to relishing the modern marvels this area provides.

Early Inhabitants

Experts believe that the area known today as the Outer Banks has a history that dates back well over a thousand years. At this time, the land was home to Native Americans with tribes ranging from the Poteskeet and Chowanog to the Algonquins too. These tribes thrived off the lush terrain and ample fishing options along the coastlines.

Settlers Arrive

The first English settlers arrived in the Outer Banks in the 16th century and brought a long-lasting mystery along with them. A group of settlers landed on Hatteras Island and quickly set up homes. When their governor went to make a supply run to England, he returned to find the entire colony had disappeared without a trace. The mystery was never solved, and today, it’s still known as “The Lost Colony.” As new settlements emerged across the Outer Banks, the area also became a popular stomping ground for pirates. This is also the period of time that experts believe wild horse populations began emerging on the Outer Banks—herds that still thrive on the shorelines to this day.

A War-Time Destination

The Outer Banks played host to one of the first battles of the Civil War and also played a crucial war during World Wars I and II. During these times of violence and battle, many U-Boats and German ships sank off the coast of the Outer Banks.

A Place of Exciting Innovation

The Wright Brothers made the Outer Banks a place that’s known as the birthplace of aviation. Taking their passion for innovation and flight, these brothers took aviation to new heights and today, their astounding contributions are commemorated as part of the history of OBX at the Wright Brothers Memorial in Kill Devil Hills.

Today, travelers from near and far come to enjoy the Outer Banks for a variety of reasons.
