Are you crazy or just half crazy?
Every spring on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, the crazies come out! Join them or just cheer them on at the Flying Pirate Half Marathon. This is a fun pirate themed event taking place on April 18-19, 2015 starting in Kitty Hawk and ending in beautiful Nags Head. The course follows the natural beauty of the Outer Banks along with some history too.
If you’ve ever run a half marathon before than you know the electricity that runs through every person that day. From the runners to the spectators, the day is full of excitement and thrills.
The half marathon starts on The Woods Road in Kitty Hawk where runners will be cheered on by locals, spectators, family members and even pas the Kitty Hawk Fire Department. The highlight for many is the run around the monument that stands for the Wright Brothers whose first flight lasted about 12 seconds and took place on the Outer Banks.
Next racers will follow along Bay Drive for a stretch of beautiful sound views and coastal homes. Marathoners will get the royal welcome as local’s gather along the street side to cheer them on. It will help give you that extra boost to make it to the finish line.
From Bay Drive, runners will make their way to Old Nags Head Woods Road which leads to Nags Head Woods. This ecological preserve is homes to thousands of species. The coolness of the lush woods is welcomed by all and the chance to see nature at its best keeps the excitement high.
By the end of the race, entrants will have experienced running a flat course on both paved roads and packed dirt trails, seen monuments to history, beautiful water views and several animal species living in Nags Head Woods.
The race ends at Pirate Quay with a Pirate Party for all. Enjoy beer and food and perform your “finish line” dance to live music from Strictly Bizzness at the Pirate Jamboree Finish Line party. This is the best place to check out the insane costumes runners adorn.
The weekend is full of fun events for all ages of scallywags! The event weekend begins with the First Flight 5K Saturday morning at the Wright Brothers Memorial Park. After the 5K, there is an awards ceremony and the Pirate Race Expo. Sunday is the BIG day with the half marathon beginning at 7:00am on the Woods Road in Kitty Hawk. Racers will run the course and end in Pirates Quay in Nags Head. The Post-Race party begins at 8:30am for all you crazy or half-crazy folks.
