Exploring Historic Corolla
When you come to Corolla, it’s almost like stepping back into history: this small town is one of the best-preserved on the Outer Banks. Many of the businesses in the historic Corolla village are repurposed and restored older homes, so as you stroll down the unpaved sand roads, amongst the live oaks and sand pines, it’s like you’re visiting the town a hundred years ago. You may even be able to attend an Easter service at the Historic Corolla Chapel via Facebook Live and complete your feeling of peace and serenity. Check their website for Easter North Carolina Service info.
If you’d like to learn more about the natural history of the Outer Banks, Corolla is a great landing spot, as two of the very best museums on the subject are located right here in this little town. Visit the Wild Horse Museum to learn about the iconic Spanish Mustangs that are a must-see when you visit Corolla; then go ahead and book yourself a 4X4 tour to visit them in their home on the distant beaches. Check their websites for COVID restrictions/updates.
For a comprehensive and fun exploration of the other species of flora and fauna to be found on the Outer Banks, visit the Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education, located adjacent to the Currituck Lighthouse. This friendly and interactive museum is the perfect place to get a crash course in the area’s natural history, before you head out sightseeing in the wonderful wilderness areas nearby. With free admission and an indoor/outdoor suite of exhibits, it’s an easy stop and fun for the whole family.
If you’re more interested in opulent architecture rather than wildlife, then Whalehead Mansion is a must-see for you. This historic 1920s Art Nouveau-style estate is set on 39 acres on the waterfront and was built as a hunting retreat by the super-wealthy Edward Collings Knight Jr, on behalf of his wife Marie, who was not welcomed at the all-male hunting retreats of the day. Their passion for hunting waterfowl led them to create this incredible home at a time when access to the island was much more difficult than it is today. Fully restored in 1992, Whalehead is now open to visitors and offers a number of interpretive programs around the grounds, as well as serving as an incredible venue for special events.

Currituck Banks is also an awesome place to explore by kayak, and there’s nearly 1000 protected acres to explore here in total. Although there are lots of great places to fish in the Outer Banks, this isn’t one of them, as it’s a sanctuary for the animals.
If you prefer to explore the outdoors on two wheels, Corolla is an absolutely perfect place to rent bicycles.
