orolla: The Perfect Beach Town

While there are a lot of great places to visit in the Outer Banks, Corolla is special for a few reasons. Because it’s on such a narrow island, it’s easy to walk from the sound to the ocean side in just a matter of minutes, making it a fun place to explore by foot or bicycle. And although it’s quiet and quaint, some of the very best Outer Banks attractions are located right here in Corolla, so you can easily enjoy them as much as you like.

Enjoy Exploring Wildlife

Corolla’s biggest claim to fame might just be its herds of wild mustangs. Tourists flock from across the Outer Banks to head out to the beaches and see them, but when you stay right in Corolla, you can easily love on these beautiful horses day after day, without needing to drive far. If you’re new to the Outer Banks, it’s recommended to first stop in at the Corolla Wild Horse Fund Museum and Store, located near the Currituck Lighthouse, so that you can learn about the history and unique needs of this population of horses. Then, hop aboard a Wild Horse Safari Tour from Back Country Safari Tours; their 4×4 beach tours are the easiest and best way to see lots of horses without worrying about getting your own vehicle stuck in the sand. Their naturalist guides can answer all your horse questions, and you’ll have special access to the private Spanish Mustang Preserve.

Tour a Private Estate

When you’ve dusted off the sand from your 4×4 horse tour, put on something a little more elegant and head over to the historic Whalehead Estate, located in Historic Corolla Park. Set on 39 acres, Whalehead was originally built in the 1920s, and offers a fascinating window into an aspect of Corolla’s past. This grand waterfront property was formerly a hunting estate for a very wealthy family, and now is open as a museum for the public to enjoy. Open year-round, there are a variety of tours and programs on offer at all times.

There are also several other places to stop by while you’re visiting Whalehead, as they’re basically next door. You can’t miss the Currituck Lighthouse, a real working lighthouse that’s been in operation since 1875 and offers great views of the town and the coastline. Afterwards, be sure to visit the adjacent Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education, a small museum that provides the area’s very best information on the unique natural history, flora, and fauna of the Corolla area.

Fun and Games

If you just want to play around and blow off some steam, stop by the Corolla Adventure Park, a truly unique spot. This “giant jungle gym in the sky” offers adults a chance to feel like kids again, with 11 different obstacle course circuits and eight zip lines to challenge yourself on. You can also try your hand at axe throwing, in case you’re in a lumberjack kind of mood.

Finally, no Memorial Day NC trip to Corolla would be complete without some ocean fun. Check out all the excitement on offer at North Beach Water Sports, where you can choose from offerings like kayak tours, crabbing and fishing tours, and even parasailing! They’ll help set you up with just about any ocean sport you’re interested in, so give them a call!
