Getting to Ocracoke Island

When you’re looking forward to time on Ocracoke Island, NC, it’s good to be aware that it’s only accessible by air or water. Ocracoke Island has multiple marinas so if you have a vessel you can use, getting here is a breeze with so many options for dropping anchor. There’s also a ferry service between the mainland and Ocracoke Island that’s run by the North Carolina Department of Transportation. The Hatteras Ferry crossing is free off Highway 12 and takes about an hour to complete. The Swan Quarter Ferry is a 2-hour and 45-minute journey while the Cedar Island Ferry takes about the same amount of time. These last two routes require reservations and are tolled.

Ocracoke Island, NC is home to no less than 16 miles of beautiful and undeveloped shoreline for guests to enjoy. Many visitors choose to explore the water’s edge in a 4×4 vehicle, but it’s hard to beat a stroll at sunset. Surf fishing, swimming, and shelling are all popular shoreline activities on Ocracoke Island which offers spectacular views for those who are interested in nature photography too.

Visit the Lighthouse
