The Amazing History of the Outer Banks

These days, travelers from across the country and globe head to the Outer Banks of North Carolina to enjoy much-deserved time away from the grind. Thanks to its beautiful scenery and wildlife, amazing atmosphere, and a plethora of shops and dining stops, the Outer Banks has become a place where travelers return time and again. But with each visit, you’re likely to learn more about the fact that this area is rich in history! In fact, nearly everywhere you look it seems that the Outer Banks holds a story whose roots run deep. The following is a brief history of the Outer Banks that might just encourage you to dig in more!

Ancient History of the Outer Banks

Experts generally agree that what we know today as the Outer Banks likely rose from the sea approximately 10,000 to 12,000 years ago. Researchers believe that the first Native tribes to inhabit this area settled there around 2,000 years ago. The area’s lush terrain and access to the sea likely made it a place where tribes could thrive.

The Arrival of European Explorers

Early European explorers, primarily of Spanish origin, arrived in the Outer Banks in the late 1400s. The first English military outpost known today as The Lost Colony was established on Roanoke Island in 1585. By 1587, English colonists were arriving in droves and by the mid-1600s, several settlements had been permanently established in the area. With more sea traffic and communities here, the need for lighthouses arose. Between the 1800s and early 1900s, the most iconic popped up along the Outer Banks as a result.

A History of Flight

In the early 20th century, the Wright Brothers played a monumental role in both the history of the Outer Banks and the history of aviation with their breakthroughs in flight technology. These advancements would lead aviation towards the incredible industry it is today, and it all started on these pristine shorelines. Today, visitors can visit the Wright Brothers monument when making the most of a trip this way. It’s a meaningful testament to both innovation and the passage of time.
