Once you land, there are several rental care options on-site and it’s no more than a 90-minute to two-hour drive to reach the Outer Banks and get your vacation underway. Norfolk International Airport is often a convenient choice not only for its proximity to the Outer Banks, but the many airlines that serve the airport too.
If you don’t mind driving a bit further, you can always choose to fly into Raleigh Durham as well. This will require about three to four hours of travel time after landing, but the view is great and there are typically more options for direct flights into this airport.
Travelers who prefer to charter a private jet into the Outer Banks will have options to land closer at Pine Island Airport, Dare County Regional Airport on Roanoke Island, or the Outer Banks Heliport depending on your mode of travel. Some travelers even splurge to land on the first flight strip located at the Wright Brothers Memorial.
Driving to the Outer Banks
Those who prefer to road trip their way to the Outer Banks will want to follow one of the two roads leading to their vacation destination. Highway 158 is also called Bypass Road and is a direct path to the Outer Banks. Highway 12 is the other option and offers travelers a beach road experience to enjoy. Both options lead to Kitty Hawk and Nags Head. From here you can direct yourself to the destinations you’re looking to enjoy or settle in at will! If you’re continuing onto Ocracoke, plan on at least three additional hours of driving time from Kitty Hawk.
Getting to the Outer Banks by Taking the Ferry In
For visitors who are starting their journeys on Ocracoke Island and heading into other areas of the Outer Banks, taking the ferry is always an option too! The Outer Banks has three ferries to choose from including the Cedar Island Ferry, the Swan Quarter, and the Ocracoke Ferry. Schedules and fees for each are readily available online and booking early in high travel season is always recommended as this enjoyable mode of transportation can be the best way to travel to Outer Banks and can fill up fast!
