Wright Brothers Memorial Museum

The Outer Banks is not only a great vacation destination, but also a place where history was made that has dramatically impacted present day life. Walk in the footsteps of the famed Wilbur and Orville Wright, whose years of scientific work and experiments resulted in the first successful flight. A visit to the Wright Brothers Memorial Museum is sure to be well worth your time!

Connect with History

Though the Wright Brothers were Ohio natives, they made yearly trips to the Outer Banks for the favorable flying conditions. They conducted their gliding experiments from the sand dunes a few miles south of the town of Kitty Hawk. On the grounds of the Wright Brothers National Memorial, you can visit the sites where the Wright Brothers first flew and where they successfully landed. Situated on the site where the Wright Brothers lived, learned, and experimented, buildings have been reconstructed to emulate what life was like during this era of discovery. A large, reconstructed hangar housing a first airplane replica is an interesting point of interest for visitors of all ages.

Wander along the dunes, which offer beautiful views of the ocean. The grounds are carefully maintained, with helpful signage that assist in making the most of your visit. A pathway with spaced out markers showing the actual distance of each of the Wright Brothers’ flights puts this new discovery into perspective.

A small museum details the lives of the Wright Brothers and their family, and guided ranger talks provide additional interesting insight into this amazing beginning to the world of aviation. A visit to the Wright Brothers Memorial Museum is a point of interest for all ages, including those with a keen interest in aviation. Stop in and further discover one of the many historical events that puts the Outer Banks on the map as both a vacation destination and a site of historical relevance!

When Wilbur and Orville were in the process of experimenting with aviation techniques, the area that today is known as Kill Devil Hills would have exclusively been referred to in 1903 as Kitty Hawk. Kill Devil Hills became an incorporated town much later, but both destinations make up the region where the Wright Brothers made history.
