A beautiful barrier island getaway to the Outer Banks of North Carolina is an intriguing option year-round. For those who are looking to switch up their holiday traditions this year, a Christmas vacation this way is even more exciting! With so much to see and do, Christmas in the Outer Banks is easy to customize according to your personal travel style whether you’re in town as a couple or spending the holiday as a traveling family. The following are just a few of the many top reasons to spend Christmas in OBX in 2023.

The Opportunity to Check out the Annual Holiday Bazaar

Hosted at the Ramada Plaza Nags Head Oceanfront in Kill Devil Hills, the annual holiday bazaar is a seasonal event you simply won’t want to miss. This gathering features over 50 vendors displaying everything from apparel and jewelry to handcrafted goods. The holiday bazaar is pet-friendly for those who are traveling with canine companions in tow, and it includes door prizes and live music too. Here, it’s easy to pick up one-of-a-kind Christmas décor while savoring the holiday spirit in abundance.

The Winter Lights at the Elizabethan Garden

If you make your way over to Manteo during a Christmas enjoyed in the Outer Banks, you’ll be right on time to enjoy a stroll through the Winter Lights display at the iconic Elizabethan Gardens. During this time of year, the gardens are transformed into a glittering wonderland of holiday lights that are fun to admire and make for a mesmerizing photo opportunity as well. Warm up indoors after you’ve seen the lights by strolling through the gift shop or settling in by the fireplace.

Yuletide Celebrations in Duck

No matter when you take time to wander through charming Duck Village, you’re in for a treat. At Christmas, you can pair your sightseeing with the annual Yuletide Celebration here as well. Pick up a Great Yuletide Elf Hunt Passport with the little ones in your group and you can check off stops you explore as you make your way through local shops and businesses. Once you’ve seen them all, a passport can be turned in for a fun holiday prize! This event also coincides with the annual Crab Pot Tree lighting in town and there’s often live holiday music at Duck Town Park.

The Illuminating Light Displays

There’s a good chance that you’ve seen the Kill Devil Hills home that belongs to the Poulos Family featured on HGTV. Each year, this family home goes above and beyond when it comes to Christmas lights and décor, much to the thrill of observing locals and visitors alike. While seeing this spectacular holiday light display on television is exciting, there’s nothing like seeing it illuminated in person. It’s well worth a stop when Christmas travels bring you to town.

Christmas Parades Designed to Thrill

Some of the very best and most entertaining Outer Banks Christmas parades are found on Hatteras Island each year. These family-friendly events are a highlight of your holiday stay and it’s not uncommon for the spectacles to be accompanied by hot chocolate and cookies. Afterward, you can visit the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and climb to the observation deck for a delightful holiday view from above. If you attend the annual Christmas parade in Manteo, you can count on enjoying live music and a variety of colorful and endlessly creative floats.

The Beautiful Winter Beaches

While you’re going to want to bundle up when you head to the Outer Banks at Christmas, this destination keeps you far from the plummeting temperatures and cold found elsewhere in the U.S. at the end of December. That means there are options to include beach outings to your holiday itinerary that come with the added benefit of fewer crowds to contend with. The beaches in Kitty Hawk are great for watching impressive waves roll in during the winter while Kill Devil Hills also has a reputation for tantalizing wave and shorebird watching this time of year. Don’t miss out on a holiday stroll along the pier in Nags Head while the beaches of Corolla are the perfect place to book a winter wild horse watching tour over Christmas alongside a knowledgeable and friendly guide.

This year, consider adding to that gratitude list by making plans to travel to the Outer Banks over the holidays! Travelers who set their sights on a Thanksgiving Outer Banks getaway will find there are plenty of opportunities for rounding out an itinerary in the name of fun. Whether you’re looking to savor every delicious moment or you’re excited to get out and explore, the Outer Banks is a beautiful and inviting place to spend Thanksgiving in good company. The following are just a few of the stops you’re going to want to be sure to add to your agenda when you plan on enjoying Thanksgiving in the Outer Banks.

Infuse Flavor and Fun into Your Stay

If you’re looking for a Thanksgiving-themed activity this year that pairs exercise, amazing flavors, and great people too, you’ll find it at the Tipsy Turkey Beer Mile. This event will be hosted on November 22 starting at 11:00 am. You’ll need to make your way to the Outer Banks Brewing Station located at 600 S Croatan Highway in Kill Devil Hills where you’ll start your race that functions as a run and drink experience. The route is broken up into quarter-mile intervals and at each stop, you’ll be treated to some delicious brews! Many participants choose to dress up in costumes and there are prizes given out at the end for the most creative of the bunch. Registration for the Tipsy Turkey Beer Mile in 2023 is $40 and you’ll need to be at least 21 to participate. At the end of the race, everyone is invited to spend the rest of the day enjoying a fun and festive backyard party at the Brewing Station.

Take Part in a Holiday Turkey Trot

Thanksgiving travelers in the Outer Banks who have a passion for running their way to fun will love the opportunity to take part in the annual ADVICE 5K Turkey Trot. This popular event is hosted on Thanksgiving Day starting at 9:00 a.m. This race is in its 27th year in 2023 and is a competitive experience that brings locals and visitors to Duck in droves. The Turkey Trot is a 5K loop that starts at Scarborough Lane and works its way through Duck’s wooded terrain. The end of the Turkey Trot is marked by a vibrant post-race party that includes refreshments, snacks, music, and tons of fun. Be sure to dress in your Thanksgiving costume and count on receiving a goodie bag when you finish the race as well. There are prizes handed out to top finishers in adult and youth categories, but everyone can feel great about crossing the finish line in holiday style. You’ll want to be sure to register for the Turkey Trot in Duck early as this event fills up fast.

Corolla also has the Wild Turkey Thanksgiving Day 5k. Lace-up your running shoes for this 5k and Youth Fun Run on Thanksgiving Day at The Whalehead Club in Historic Corolla Park. This is a family and community event in the spirit and fellowship of the holiday open to runners, walkers, stroller/jogger, and wheelchair participants. In the spirit of Thanksgiving, canned goods/non-perishable food items will be collected for The Sonder Project in support of our local Food Bank.

Set Aside Time for On-the-Water Fun

Unlike some destinations across the US that see frigid temperatures around Thanksgiving time, the Outer Banks is fortunately placed to see average temperatures in the 50s through November. That means there’s no reason outdoor adventurers can make the most of their time on the water during their holiday stay. Fishing charters still run this time of year if you’re looking for a deep-sea outing and casting a line from the shore is an option as well. This time of year, you can count on reeling in blues and drums alike no matter when you head out to enjoy an afternoon of angling.

Add a Thanksgiving Feast to the Itinerary

For many travelers, it’s hard to imagine a Thanksgiving trip anywhere at all without a Thanksgiving feast included in the experience. A visit to the Outer Banks this time of year is no exception to the rule! The good news is, that there are a variety of restaurants that remain open on Thanksgiving Day to provide guests and locals with amazing meals to top off the holiday in savory style.

One of those destinations is Owen’s Restaurant located at 7114 S. Virginia Dare Trail in Nags Head. They’re open from Wednesday through Sunday for dinner starting at 5:00 p.m. and on Thanksgiving, they’re offering guests options to reserve a place at their Thanksgiving gathering between noon and 8:00 p.m. The menu this year is designed to treat the tastebuds with starters including Charleston oyster stew, a pomegranate vinaigrette salad, and New England butternut squash bisque.

Guests will be able to enjoy entrees like herb-rubbed turkey breast, roasted rockfish, broiled seafood trios, oysters, crabcakes, or a full Thanksgiving platter. Dessert will be served up as well with options including bananas foster bread pudding, southern lemon pie, pumpkin cheesecake, or vanilla bean crème brulee. Owen’s Restaurant will also have a full kid’s menu available for those who are dropping by to enjoy Thanksgiving lunch or dinner with little ones in tow.

Fall also marks the shoulder season before winter adventurers look for new locales to enjoy. This gives autumn visitors to the Outer Banks more space to roam, relax, and enjoy their surroundings without the high travel season crowds to contend with. Temperatures this time of year are just as inviting and ensure that time outside is well spent. Visitors who head to the Outer Banks in the fall can typically count on highs in the 80s through September and lingering around the low 70s in October. Even in November, average temperatures in the Outer Banks stick around 65 degrees making for a comfortable stay.

It’s a Terrific Time of Year for Beach Hopping

That combination of great weather and fewer crowds makes fall a terrific time of year for visitors to the Outer Banks to enjoy beach hopping at their leisure. The Outer Banks is made up of a collection of charming communities, each with its own shorelines to explore. When you don’t have to worry about too many others sharing the space, it’s a chance to really relax, unwind, and admire the scenery at your own pace. If you find yourself in Nags Head in the fall, time at Jockey’s Ridge State Park is an amazing choice. You can settle in, explore, or put your nature photography skills to the test here too this time of year. Don’t overlook the joy of a fall beach bonfire complete with s’mores exclusively in Nags Head with a permit in hand when you want the fun to extend beyond sundown each day of your stay!

Fall Is the Time for Great Festivals

While the Outer Banks hosts a variety of fun festivals for visitors and locals to enjoy year-round, fall comes with a particularly appealing lineup to look forward to. If you’re heading this way in October, you’ll be right on time to enjoy the arrival of the Outer Banks Seafood Festival which is always as delicious as it is entertaining. Another great fall festival to add to your itinerary is the Outer Banks Bluegrass Island Festival which is hosted in Manteo at the end of the month.

See our Outer Banks Events Calendar for all Events.

You’ll Find Prime Fishing Opportunities

Fall is epic for fishing on the Outer Banks! Surf fisherman love the blue fish runs, rockfish, and especially trout! Offshore fishing is on fire! You’ll reel in everything from yellowfin tuna, dolphin, and blue marlin as well. November marks the month when bigeye tuna and giant bluefin are at peak numbers while Spanish mackerel are typically found nearer to the shoreline.

It’s Surf Season

If adrenaline-pumping fun on the waves is just your style, heading to the Outer Banks in the fall means you’ll be aligned with prime surf season too. Swells are impressive this time of year, making the waters a big draw for those who are experienced on a surfboard. The mild temperatures make it comfortable for surfers to stay out on the water longer as well.

While the Outer Banks of North Carolina is certainly a place where days on the sand soaking up the sun at a leisurely pace can be enjoyed, it’s also a destination built on a foundation of rich history, culture, and entertainment too. All of these factors contributed to the Outer Banks making The Discoverer’s list of 10 essential stops along the Southern Coast for travelers. The comprehensive logistics of exploring the Outer Banks are pointed out with a focus on the fact that the 200-mile-long string of barrier islands offers up a comprehensive way to savor time on the eastern coast. Evaluators at The Discoverer loved that the Outer Banks Scenic Byway runs through no less than 21 coastal villages and covered 138 driving miles as well. This route is relished by road trippers, landscape photographers, and those looking to simply enjoy the experience in customized fashion alike.

In fact, this year, the team at TheDiscoverer.com named 3 Outer Banks beaches as part of a lineup of the 7 Best in all of North Carolina!

Corolla, Kill Devil Hills, and Ocracoke all secured top places on the list deeming these stretches of shoreline impeccable places to visit when beach-hopping is top of mind in North Carolina. The Discoverer team pointed out the highlights of each destination as well as the activities and views as combined reasons travelers would be right to want to linger on the sand at these locales. In addition to Corolla, Kill Devil Hills, and Ocracoke, The Discoverer team pointed to Cape Lookout, Shackleford Banks, Atlantic Beach, Wrightsville Beach as well as Carolina & Kure Beach moving south along the coastline.

The Endless Appeal of Corolla’s Beautiful Beaches

Situated on the north end of the Outer Banks, Corolla was highlighted on the list as a place that’s not only brimming over with inviting beaches but offers up sensationally scenic shorelines for visitors as well. One of the more unique aspects of the beaches in Corolla is the fact that they are accessible to vehicles, offering up a route where you can leave the road behind and swap it out for a new mode of transportation instead.

The reason so many visitors opt to put their 4WD vehicle to work on the sand is because roaming the beaches of Corolla, there’s also a good chance that you’ll encounter a population of wild horses. These thriving groups are believed to be the descendants of horses originally left behind by early European settlers. Some believe they’re the descendants of horses that survived nearby shipwrecks as Europeans scoured the coastline, eventually finding their way to shore and making the beaches their forever home over hundreds of years. There are ample opportunities for visitors to Corolla’s Beaches to book guided tours that provide an up-close look at these wild horse populations—another major draw noted in Corolla’s beach ranking on the list.

A visit to Historic Corolla Village is another draw that makes the beaches of Corolla absolutely captivating. For those that are looking for a place to enjoy a beach day in good company, they can count on finding in Kill Devil Hills which boasts the title of most populated destination along the upper Outer Banks. The team at Thrillist.com sets out to create a ranking of the best beach towns in America by looking at features that capture the minds and imaginations of travelers. Not to mention those places that simply satisfy the best itineraries out there. The list is created from the idea that travelers are looking for “the perfect beach” experience when they head out and this could be a little different depending on preferences. Some beachgoers are looking to beach bike their way through a stay while others are excited to find beach towns built around bustling boardwalks. While some travelers can’t wait to explore dunes, others simply want to settle into the sand at their own leisurely pace. The list the team at Thrillist.com creates accounts for all of these experiences, making Nags Head placement that much more exciting!

One of the features that truly caught the attention of the reviewing team at Thrillist.com was the fact that Nags Head is home to the tallest sand dune on the East Coast. It’s accessible for viewing and experiencing within the parameters of local Jockey’s Ridge State Park. The article encourages visitors to scramble up to the top at least once during their stay to capture the sunset in a completely unique beach town fashion. Jennette’s Pier is also highlighted as a place travelers won’t want to miss out on when they make their way to Nags Head. It’s a recommended spot for those moments when visitors are looking to enjoy people-watching and seafood restaurant hopping alike. Nags Head’s proximity to place like the Wright Brothers National Memorial in nearby Kill Devil Hills makes it a great destination for those who are looking to expand their itineraries too. Aviation enthusiasts will find climbing the 90-foot hill where the Wright brothers conducted their glider tests to be an incredible way to bring the past back to life and pay homage to local innovation. Proximity to Kitty Hawk and the area’s crisscrossing canals ideal for kayaking is also pointed out as a reason Nags Head should be at the top of every traveler’s beach town must-visit list this year. Whether you’re one for cleverly-named restaurants, or you can’t wait to hit the waves, you’ll find reason to return to Nags Head, and the team at Thrillist.com wouldn’t have it any other way.
