History of the Ocracoke Island Lighthouse
When you visit the Ocracoke Island Lighthouse, you’ll step back in time. While the lighthouse itself may not be the most imposing onto the landscape as some others, it is, however, the oldest operational lighthouse in North Carolina. At 65 feet tall, it is the smallest lighthouse in the Outer Banks region. That said, its beacon can be seen from 14 miles out on the Pamlico Sound and the Atlantic Ocean.
This history of Ocracoke Island stretches back to the first Spanish explorers in the late 16th century. The historic shipping port island is famous for the assault by pirates that recognized the pirating potential on the barrier islands. The most notable of those pirates? Blackbeard, himself. In 1822, the U.S. Government purchased two acres of Ocracoke Island for $50 and built the Ocracoke Island Lighthouse, and, in 1823, the lighthouse you see today was established.
How You Can Visit the Lighthouse
The Ocracoke Island Lighthouse is different from many of the lighthouses in the area in that it lacks a gift shop, museum, or information center on site. Despite those things on-site, the lighthouse makes a unique experience for those taking in a walking tour or bicycling around Ocracoke Island. It’s perfect for the amateur or professional photographer seeking to capture the essence of the island, and makes a beautiful location to plan a picnic! Be sure to stop by the quaint keeper’s quarters enveloped in iconic live oaks, too. The distinguished character of the lighthouse is one sure to provide special memories for the seasoned veteran vacationer. Lastly, you can stop by any number of local gift shops to pick up a souvenir or memento of your visit!
