Ocean Adventures with Kill Devil Hills Beach Rentals
If you somehow get tired of lounging on the perfect white sand, working on your tan, there’s tons of fun activities to explore here on the waters of the Outer Banks. Fishing is a popular sport here: try your hand at casting from the beach, a fishing pier, or on a deep-sea charter. Head to Avalon Fishing Pier for a fun and easy place to cast a line; you’ll find not only many serious fishermen there, but also a souvenir shop, bar, and two levels of seating to enjoy the view. There are many companies offering fishing charters from Kill Devil Hills, so just take a look around! Try your hand at catching marlin, mahimahi, and tuna; cook up your catch at the end of the day in your well-appointed kitchen.
Kill Devil Hills is a great place to put your toes in the water and try out a new ocean sport. You can rent all the beach gear you might need from Ocean Atlantic Rentals, including kayaks, paddleboards, surfboards, and even bicycles! They also rent beach umbrellas and even golf carts, as well as baby gear, so give them a call if you need anything at all. Paddle around Kitty Hawk Bay and Colington Creek, exploring the little inlets and islands as you go.
If you prefer to kayak on a guided excursion, get in touch with Outer Banks Kayak Adventures. Their informative tours explore a variety of natural areas in the region, including the nearby Kitty Hawk Woods Coastal Reserve. They offer kayak and stand-up paddle tours in a variety of lengths, some of which are really great for families with young children. If you’ve always wanted to explore the mysterious depths of a coastal swampland, check out their tour of Pine Island Audubon Sanctuary, where one wrong turn could get you lost forever (thankfully you have a knowledgeable guide to get you back out again!). Alternatively, visit the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge, where the waters are strangely black with tannins from trees, and alligators sun themselves on floating slough grasses. You might also spot river otters, black bears, and maybe even a bobcat!
A Stroll on Dry Land
If you’re not much of a water person, there’s still a ton of outdoor activities to keep you busy in Kill Devil Hills. Explore a unique maritime forest at Nags Head Woods, an 800 acre preserve on the sound side that showcases the way the Outer Banks used to be. With terrain ranging from swampland to submerged forest, this unique habitat is an excellent place to view wildlife, as well as get some exercise on the various trails. You also won’t want to miss a stop at the Wright Brothers’ National Memorial, located on the hill at the center of town, for some area history and great views. Afterwards, step over to the adjacent Dare County Arboretum for a leisurely stroll along paths with well-marked signage for local trees and plants.
