The Town of Duck
Duck is one of the best towns in the Outer Banks for families, and here’s why. The town itself offers a great selection of amenities, including the mile-long boardwalk on the Sound side of town, which allows visitors the unique opportunity to experience nature and also stop for some great ice cream along the way! Duck also has a playground, a public kayak/canoe launch, and fun summer events for all to enjoy at the public amphitheatre and around town. And hey, your kids will love telling your friends that they’re visiting a town called Duck!
Water Sports and More
The Outer Banks is obviously a great place for fun in the ocean, and Duck is no exception. Some of the best water sports companies are located here in Duck, such as Nor’Banks Sailing and Watersports. If you’ve ever wanted to learn to sail or stand-up paddle, or you’d like to try a new adventure like parasailing, Nor’Banks is your spot. You can also rent a wave runner or a pontoon boat for the day or go on a sunset catamaran cruise. Duck is also an awesome place to rent a kayak, as they’re easy to launch, and there’s a beautiful stretch of undeveloped coastline for you to explore directly to the south of town.
If you’d prefer a guided kayak tour, check out the Coastal Kayak Touring Company, who leads tours all throughout the Outer Banks. Just perfect for adventurous families and groups of all ages, Coastal Kayak offers tours of some of the area’s very finest wetland preserves. Take the kids for a 1.5-hour trip in the Kitty Hawk Woods Coastal Reserve, which remains sheltered and calm even on windy days; this maritime forest is a truly unique habitat where osprey and bald eagles nest. Alternatively, explore the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge, where cypress trees turn the water mysteriously black, and alligators sun themselves on floating slough grass. Enjoy learning the logging and moonshining history of this unique area, as well as getting in a great paddling workout (kayaks only, no SUP with alligators!)
Are you looking for a unique activity that’s for adults only? Check out Vineyard Voyage, a fun wine tour that departs by boat from Duck. You’ll head across Currituck Sound, seeing the sights along the way, and end up at Sanctuary Vineyards, located on the historic Wright Brothers’ farm. From the hunting lodge boathouse, you’ll travel across marsh and farmlands to reach the 33 acres of grapevines and the winery itself. Between wine tastings and learning about the fascinating process of winemaking, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to indulge yourself!
Duck is also a great place for when you’re just looking to relax. There are several spas in town offering massage, so why not treat yourself to a session while you’re here? Check out Aqua Spa and Sanderling for some great massage with great views of the sound. If you prefer a more active form of relaxation, try a yoga or pilates class at Village Yoga, which offers a wonderful selection for beginners and experts alike. They offer group classes in their studio, but also private lessons at your rental home, as well as classes on the beach. Go ahead and give them a call!
