How to Plan Your Visit to Roanoke Festival Park

Discover the Best Things to do at Roanoke Festival Park

The settlement of Roanoke Island, NC, which came 23 years prior to the settlement of Jamestown, was the first European settlement in the New World. Although the settlement didn’t survive due to tragic, mysterious reasons, the story still exists at Roanoke Festival Park!

One of the most fascinating attractions at the park is the Elizabeth II ship replica. The model ship represents one of the seven original ships from the Roanoke Voyage in 1585. When you climb aboard, you’ll have the chance to help the crew set sail, plot a course, swab the decks, and more! It’s a fun and interesting history lesson sure to spark the imagination of all who come aboard.

After exploring the ship, head to the Settlement Site where you can observe woodworking, play Elizabethan games, and watch the blacksmith at his craft. You’ll see costumed interpreters that demonstrate what daily life was like for the early settlers. Search for colonial goods, try on armor, and have conversations with the settlers!

Following the Settlement Site, make your way to American Indian Town to see a village similar to what English explorers discovered during their voyage. Learn about Coastal Algonquin culture and history as you see replicas of the community’s homes, agricultural areas, and work shelters. Experience hands-on history through interactive exhibits and activities like rope making, basket weaving, and food preparation.

Include the Adventure Museum on Your Itinerary

Indoors at Roanoke Festival Park, you’ll find the Adventure Museum. At the museum, you have the chance to see 400 years of the region’s history and culture on display. Take a self-guided tour to see an interactive angle of the history of Roanoke Island and the Outer Banks region. Then, listen to Stumpy the Pirate tell spooky stories of the notorious Blackbeard and his visits down in Ocracoke. The Adventure Museum is the perfect compliment to the outdoor attractions at the park!
