What to Pack for a Week at the Outer Banks

The Essentials

beach itemsFirst, you’ll need to see what your vacation rental provides. Many of the rentals at Shoreline OBX include fully-stocked kitchens, plenty of soft linens, washers and dryers, and more. Just be sure to check before you finish packing!

Double check for these before you leave: Do you have your wallet, your credit card/debit card, driver’s license, phone, and reservation information? Important medications?

For the Home- Depending on what is included in your vacation rental, you may need to pick up paper towels, toilet paper, coffee and coffee filters, laundry and dish soap, garbage bags, and other day-to-day items.

Food- There are plenty of grocery stores in the area, so you don’t have to worry about bringing food with you. You might want to pack a cooler so you can bring drinks and snacks with you to the beach!

Clothing- Pack enough for a week! It’s a good idea to bring a light jacket for cooler evenings, as well as a pair of jeans or two and shoes and socks in addition to beach sandals.

Toiletries- Don’t forget the bathroom products you use every day! Be sure to bring shampoo, soap, face wash, toothpaste, a toothbrush, lotion, a hairbrush, glasses and/or contacts and contact solution, and any other products you use. This ensures you’ll be as comfortable as possible in your home away from home! Insect repellent, bandaids, and aloe are also good things to have on hand for a week at the Outer Banks.

Electronics- Double check that you have your cell phone charger before leaving for your vacation! If you have an iPad, laptop, camera, or anything else like that, be sure you’ve grabbed those (and their chargers) too.

Make Space in Your Beach Bag for These Items

beach chairs and umbrella on beachWe’ve listed some of the essentials for your beach day below so you can spend more time relaxing and less time scrambling! Something to keep in mind as you are packing is that when you’re booking your rental with Shoreline OBX, you can also reserve beach gear. We offer specials throughout the year ranging from a $250 credit to excellent discounts. We’ll even have the gear delivered to your home on arrival day, making it a breeze to pack light!

Sunscreen- It might seem like an obvious one, but we want to make sure you don’t forget it! As soothing as the sun’s warm rays are, it’s important to protect your skin. Look for a sunscreen that has broad-spectrum protection, and be sure to check the ingredients!

A beach umbrella- An umbrella goes hand-in-hand with sunscreen, and it’s especially helpful if you have young children because it will give them a backup layer of protection from the sun.

Beach towels or chairs- You’ll need somewhere to relax when you’re not in the water. Spread out a beach towel or settle down in a chair, close your eyes, and enjoy the warmth.

Bathing suits- another obvious item, but sometimes those are the easiest to forget! It doesn’t hurt to pack an extra swimsuit so you don’t have to put a wet suit back on or wait for it to come out of the dryer.

Sunglasses, hats, and coverups- Cut unwanted glare from the sun with glasses and hat, and don’t forget to bring a pair of sandals and something lightweight to wear over your swimsuit on your way to and from the beach.

Beach toys- Kids can play with just about anything on the beach, but you can make sure they are occupied with some beach toys. Having a pail and a shovel makes it easier to build a sandcastle! Flying a kite or throwing a frisbee are also fun beach pastimes.

Baby powder or cornstarch- Would you like to avoid leaving a mini beach of sand in your shower after a day at the beach? Just sprinkle a little bit of baby powder or cornstarch on your feet and legs before you leave the beach to get the sand off!

A good book or two- When the kids are occupied, it’s the perfect opportunity for you to settle in and enjoy a good beach read.
